Alfresco Process Services 101

In Alfresco University’s “Alfresco Process Services 101” course, we’ll give you a crash course in BPMN, workflow development, and all things APS through a series of interactive videos, demonstrations, and lab exercises designed to get you up to speed with one of the hottest products.

About this course

Description: This entry-level e-Learning course is targeted at business analysts and end users who are completely new to Alfresco Process Services, and by the time you finish, you will have everything you need to handle core tasks and responsibilities for using Alfresco Process Services effectively. If you’re a developer or process engineer, Alfresco Process Services 101 will serve as a solid foundation for you to continue on to future courses.

This course is designed to be self-paced e-Learning, with relevant documentation and support included in the attached course materials. This course should take no less than four hours, with most students taking from six to eight hours to truly master the concepts we introduce here. Throughout the course, we’ll have various quizzes, demonstrations of important skills and processes, and interactive labs where you’ll be asked to apply your new knowledge to a real solution.

Audience: Business analysts and end-users new to Alfresco Process Services. The course will also prove useful for developers and administrators who need a review of Alfresco Process Services, BPMN, and workflow development.

Prerequisites: If you’re new to Alfresco Process Services or business process modeling, don’t worry!  This course is designed to take absolute beginners to competency, so you can do your job on a daily basis as efficiently as possible. You don’t need any advanced technical knowledge to complete the course, nor do you need to be familiar with BPMN, Alfresco Process Services, or process modeling before enrollment.

However, before taking this course, you should have a working understanding of the English language, as well as be able to understand some technical details (or be able to use a search engine to research them).

Important: You will have access to the course content for a full year from the date you enrolled. However, if you have a Virtual Machine assigned to the course, the VM will only be available for a total of 30 days from your enrollment. Ensure you complete all lab exercises within this window.

Course Objectives: In Alfresco Process Services 101, we will introduce you to BPMN and its core concepts, as well as teach you how to build functional and effective process models using Alfresco Process Services. We also teach you how to package and deploy these processes in a real business environment using Alfresco Process Services Apps and Stencils, as well as how to administer and monitor your process from start to finish.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand constructs of BPMN 2.0 and use them to build process models
  • Understand constructs of BPMN 2.0 and use them to build process models
  • Comprehend different avenues of business collaboration using Alfresco Process Services
  • Utilize Alfresco Process Services to create process models using the Step Editor and BPMN Editor tools
  • Explain the “inner workings” of the technology stack and what happens “behind the scenes” on a high level
  • Master a methodology for creating brand new processes in Alfresco Process Services
  • Convert conceptual process models into executable ones
  • Deploy and administer your processes from start to finish

Course Outline: This course contains a series of “learning sequences” (or “modules”) that consist of video lecture, tablet-oriented simulations and presentations, and interactive lab exercises using a virtual environment. This virtual machine (“VM”) takes place on an Ubuntu (Linux) platform, but does not require you to know any command-line commands. Everything will be conducted in your web browser.

  • Module 0 - Course Introduction
  • Module 1 - BPMN Overview
  • Module 2 - BPMN Roles
  • Module 3 - Introducing Alfresco Process Services
  • Module 4 - BPMN Basics: Level 1
  • Module 5 - BPMN Basics: Level 2
  • Module 6 - Lab Sequence
  • Module 7 - Advanced BPMN Modeling using Alfresco Process Services
  • Module 8 - Deploying and Administering Your Process using Apps

Technical Requirements: Because Alfresco Process Services is hosted entirely in a web-based application, most user distributions will work with Alfresco Process Services (regardless of operating system, i.e.- Windows, Linux, Mac). The course covers Alfresco Process Services 1.3 specifically, so any prior versions may lack certain features we cover in the program. You will need the following to complete this course:

  • A web browser including IE9 or later, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Firefox is our preferred browser for this course.
  • Adobe Flash Player v9 or later.
  • A high-speed internet connection (minimum 8Mb/sec).
